Literacy Tumble - or, a big change.

Hello everyone! Recently (actually, for the last 6 weeks) we have been try a new learning model - it has a name like that, anyway - for literacy (Reading and Writing),which is called, drumroll please - dudlum dudlum dudlum - the Literacy Tumble! Basically, it is Google Slide where we have things we Simply Must Do, things we Probably Should Do, and things we Maybe Could Do. Actually it's just Must Do, Should Do, and Could Do. But the first ones sound better. Anyway, the number of Must do's vary, and so does what they are (it can be as little as 3, and as many as 5). Could and Should stay pretty much the same. This blog post is a Simply Must Do for Week 9. I think we have 10 weeks in a term. But our school often starts and ends on different dates, so don't rely on it being Week 9 for you too. Anyway, the general set of tasks is:
  • Must Do's: Blog comment, Reading follow-up, and Writing follow-up.
  • Should Do's: Creative Writing, Cybersmart Finishing, and Blog Post (moved to Must Do this week)
  • Could Do's: Independent Reading, Note-taking, and Poem Activity (replaced with Email activity. We've had the Poetry Competition)
The one I've completed the most of is Week Six, so here it is. All the completed tasks can be accessed too.
Except the narrative writing that is linked to in the checklist. That is a work in progress. You can't see that yet. You probably will by the end of the year.
Well, I certainly prefer it to how we used to do it (Reading crossover, fruit, Writing crossover, then Maths crossover). It does take up more time though. Hmm. Anyway, see you later. Bye!

Welcome back!

Hello everybody and welcome back to 2018. Yes, I'm still in Manukau (but a Year 6 now. Being a Year 6 doesn't feel very different from being a Year 5). No time for a welcome post though. Straight into work. Hello! Ok, so yesterday we made a DLO (A digital learning object) about how to keep your Chromebook safe. They were based on clauses in the Kawa of Care, by Ako Hiko  about taking care of your Chromebook. I made a Google Drawing. And here it is! I originally planned to use Piktochart (click here  to Google it), but I had to use a Google Drawing instead. And that pretty much sums up everything. Comment if you want. Bye!

3 weeks - 3 things (Circuits, Geoboards, then Tech Challenge)

Hello again! Yes, my comments are still broken, but I have arranged with Mr Riceman to hopefully get it fixed very soon. We think it must have broke when I redesigned my blog. So, just beware, it might end up going a bit funny over the weekend while it gets fixed.  Anyway, that isn't what I'm meant to dedicate this blog post to. So, over the last 3 weeks, Te Waka Ako has been doing a technology rotation. Firstly (these are in the same order as the title), we did Circuits (or Papertronics) in Manukau. For that we made a circuit (mine was a switch) out of a button battery, LED, tinfoil, and spilt pins. Then, it was Geoboards, where we nailed (what else?) nails into a piece of wood we sawed ourselves, so we could thread rubber bands on it. Lastly, it was the Technology/BP challenge, where me made a structure that could hold a marble out from a table. Which is not nearly as easy as it sounds. We did it to "use trial and error on ideas", "develop perseverance"

6 sentences writing - Where am I describing?

Hello!  T his week we are working on using descriptive language by sharing our writing straight onto our blog.  The challenge we have is to describe a place using only six sentences. After reading the description you need to guess the place that has been described. It would really help if you say what clues helped you come to this conclusion. Here is mine! I sit on a chair, with metal arms. A plane whooshes past me, but quite a bit away People walk past, clutching suitcases. I grip a document allowing me to travel. Gates beep, allowing people to go further. People stand at desks, ready to help. Can you guess? Put your guess down in the comments. Bye!

We're all going on a Summer (Learning Journey)!

Hello! Today we signed up for the Summer Learning Journey over the holidays, where we do blog posts over the summer holidays about (this year) the environment. To try it out, we're doing the Summer (they also do them in winter) 2016 - 17 one, which is about countries around the world, and I chose (any guesses?) the UK. And part of that is saying, on this very blog post, why I chose it. And I did because I re(eee)ally want to go to (guess again) London! because of:  The museums! The history! The Tube! The buildings ! The art! The bookshops (among other things)! And apparently now for 3 interesting facts. Here goes: The UK is actually four countries: England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. It was the world's first industrialised (proper factories, pretty much) country. The BBC (their national TV and radio company) is the world's oldest. And that is all (for now). Bye!
