We're all going on a Summer (Learning Journey)!

Hello! Today we signed up for the Summer Learning Journey over the holidays, where we do blog posts over the summer holidays about (this year) the environment. To try it out, we're doing the Summer (they also do them in winter) 2016 - 17 one, which is about countries around the world, and I chose (any guesses?) the UK. And part of that is saying, on this very blog post, why I chose it. And I did because I re(eee)ally want to go to (guess again) London! because of:  The museums! The history! The Tube! The buildings ! The art! The bookshops (among other things)! And apparently now for 3 interesting facts. Here goes: The UK is actually four countries: England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. It was the world's first industrialised (proper factories, pretty much) country. The BBC (their national TV and radio company) is the world's oldest. And that is all (for now). Bye!

Googling (Well)!

Hello! Today (Yes, very fast) we completed a slideshow on how to be better at doing something done so often that it has entered our dictionaries. Yes, Googling. Google is very powerful. Especially when you use it cleverly, because it has lots of tricks up its sleeves (And a lot of surprises as well). Here is the slideshow (on being good at Googling)! If you want to do the quiz, you can also do it below the slideshow, without opening a new tab. By the way, you have to sign in to Google to do the quiz, so no one does it twice. If you don't want to do the quiz here, just click on the picture of it in the slideshow. Loading... Something I learned was how to make a quiz using Google Forms, because I have only ever made a Google Form twice, and a quiz with it never. Something I found hard was figuring out what to do with modifying the search results. Something I could probably do next time would be come up with some more questions for the quiz. Thanks for reading, and au revoir!

Literacy Tumble - or, a big change.

Hello everyone! Recently (actually, for the last 6 weeks) we have been try a new learning model - it has a name like that, anyway - for literacy (Reading and Writing),which is called, drumroll please -  dudlum  dudlum  dudlum - the Literacy Tumble! Basically, it is Google Slide where we have things we Simply Must Do, things we Probably Should Do, and things we Maybe Could Do. Actually it's just Must Do, Should Do, and Could Do. But the first ones sound better. Anyway, the number of Must do's vary, and so does what they are (it can be as little as 3, and as many as 5). Could and Should stay pretty much the same. This blog post is a Simply Must Do for Week 9. I think we have 10 weeks in a term. But our school often starts and ends on different dates, so don't rely on it being Week 9 for you too. Anyway, the general set of tasks is: Must Do's: Blog comment, Reading follow-up, and Writing follow-up. Should Do's: Creative Writing, Cybersmart Finishing, and Blog Post

3 weeks - 3 things (Circuits, Geoboards, then Tech Challenge)

Image
Hello again! Yes, my comments are still broken, but I have arranged with Mr Riceman to hopefully get it fixed very soon. We think it must have broke when I redesigned my blog. So, just beware, it might end up going a bit funny over the weekend while it gets fixed.  Anyway, that isn't what I'm meant to dedicate this blog post to. So, over the last 3 weeks, Te Waka Ako has been doing a technology rotation. Firstly (these are in the same order as the title), we did Circuits (or Papertronics) in Manukau. For that we made a circuit (mine was a switch) out of a button battery, LED, tinfoil, and spilt pins. Then, it was Geoboards, where we nailed (what else?) nails into a piece of wood we sawed ourselves, so we could thread rubber bands on it. Lastly, it was the Technology/BP challenge, where me made a structure that could hold a marble out from a table. Which is not nearly as easy as it sounds. We did it to "use trial and error on ideas", "develop perseverance"

Stop the Motion!

Hello! Recently (so, just let me check, today, and the 3rd of August) we made stop motion movies, using an app that has been on our Chromebooks for a long time (since about 9:15 the first day we got them, which was, let me check Thursday the 2nd 2017), Stop Motion Animator. No, the capital letters aren't meant to glorify it, it's just that the actual name is Capitalized. Anyway, each time we did it (twice) I made two movies. On the 3rd, I made Tower and Paperclip Heart, and today I made Red and Blue (one, not two. I know it looks like two) and Crush + Twirl. On Thursday we used Lego (The word is trademarked, and the bricks are patented, although I think the ones we used might have been cheap rip-offs or something) and today we used Playdough (the word is probably trademarked, and, believe it or not, so is the smell). Enough with the salad dressing (it's a metaphor), and here they are. First is Tower (oooh), then Paperclip Heart. Made today are (in order) Red and Blue, then

"Welcome!" and "Commenting 2.0"

Hello everyone, and welcome to Term 3! First of all, I have realised that my blog comments seem to have been broken, and I am going to try to fix it. Hello! As with Term 2 (or was it the start of the year?), no time for a proper welcome post. Straight into work. And that work is improving a comment we made earlier today. Explanation below. Improving comments - Jacob On Jasmine's blog: Hi Jasmine, my name is Jacob, and I am a student in Manukau. That kea looks good, because of the detail. Maybe, if you do something like that again, you could make the stars smaller. I think that would look better. So, I made a comment on Jasmine's blog (link here ) earlier yesterday (so, before lunch), and then, later yesterday (so, after lunch), I SMRFed (remember? It means copy it and put it in the right Google Drive folder) the drawing above, put the comment in, and checked it against the criteria (the boxes in the middle that say things like "Does it convey meaning?")

Matariki/Pleiades/Seven Sisters/Messier 45/Melotte 22/...

Hello everyone! If you haven't noticed (you probably would have if you watch TVNZ, because they seem to have decided to advertise it) it's Matariki! A lot has been happening around Matariki (such as the kite day on top of Mt Roskill), or will be, and so we have been learning a lot about Matariki. If you were curious about the title, it's some of the different names for Matariki. In reading, we made a Google Slides about it, and here it is! And you aren't the only person who learned something. I had no idea that anyone said there were 7, not 9. I also had no idea that Taranaki couldn't see Matariki. If you were wondering when the Mt Roskill Kite Day is, it's on the 8th of July. If you want to comment, then do. Bye!

We went to Tiritiri Matangi!

Image
Hello everyone! On Thursday 31st of May, we went to Tiritiri Matagi Island. If you have never heard of it, it is a small, pest free island, (Wikipedia article link here ) about 3 km away from Whangaparoa. We had to get to school by 7:30 (AM!), and the bus left at 7:50 (once again AM!). Then, we got the ferry to Tiritiri (from Pier 4 at Downtown Ferry Terminal, if anyone wants to know), via Gulf Harbour (basically a ferry terminal surrounded by an absolutely giant marina), on the Whangaparoa Peninsula. When we arrived, there was a weird little track along the right of the pier, which turned out to be the rails for a small cart that carried everyone's bags except ours. Then, we loaded our bags into the back of the van that carried them to the Visitor Centre. Then, we spent an hour or two walking up there, while the van probably could have went up and down about 10 times. Once we got up there, we had lunch (and chocolate, as a "thank you" from our guide), and looked at

If you don't want to be flooded, live in this house! - Post not sponsored by anything.

Hello everyone!  Before we get started, I have something to explain. I know my blog looks different. It's not an accident. I did it myself. If you're wondering where all the little gadgets went, the about me one has been updated and is sitting below the title, Search is the magnifying glass up and to the right of the title, and everything else, like Translate (new!), a list of dictionary's (new!) contributors, that calender of posts thingy, the cloud of labels, Report Abuse, Recent comments, and total views, are all in the three lines button up and left from the title. If you want to follow, it isn't at the bottom of the blog like it probably should be. Instead, it's in the menu under the three lines (anyone have a better name for it?). You can get email alerts as well  (please do, or else everyone can see your full name)  by clicking the button underdeath the about me.  But now, onto what I made, a (not entirely) flood proof house! I made it using Tinkercad . On

What a dog does!

Hello! Today (I. Blame it on talk to type) have a slideshow about Zeb. Zeb, if you were wondering, is the dog in the book, Skink Gully, by Des Hunt, who is coming to our school later, but this sentence is getting way too many commas. Basically, we had to do a character description of someone in the book. And I chose Zeb. You might (or might not) know that I don't like big dogs that much. And, for the purposes of a terrible drawing, I presumed he was a big dog (sorry, I don't know any big dog breeds). Anyway, I put the terrible drawing together with a few characteristics (thank you, spell check) in a Google Slide, which is right down under these words! Just click on the blue words to skip to a page, or, in the case of the words Sketch.io , it is a link to that very website, which should open in a new tab. I forgot the date of the Des Hunt visit, and for some reason it isn't in Gogol Calendar, so I can't say what it is. If you feel at all inclined to comment then ple
